2006 was an interesting travelling year. After my usual visits to North-East Victoria for Christmas I spent some time around Western Victoria. I had been there a lot for work, but not to explore. I found the towns extremely Motorhome friendly - they give out lists of camp sites graded from Caravan Parks through to Free Camps. I included the Folk Festival at Francis - fantastic!
After attending the National Folk Festival in Canberra over Easter I headed north with Darwin in my sights. This time I went the inland route via Dubbo, up to the Warranbungles, then walking in Carnarvon Gorge - an absolute "must see". The rest of Western Queensland didn't grab me all that much, and some of the mining towns are so short of accommodation for their workers that they are difficult for travellers.
The Barkly Tablelands were blanketed in bright yellow Wattle and purple Turkey Bush following the late rains from Cyclones Larry and Monica.
I spent some time in Darwin, then flew to Broome to board the Sail Training Ship Leeuwin for a 12 day sailing adventure through the Kimberley to Darwin. I also took advantage of the cheap fares from Darwin to Singapore to explore some more of South-East Asia - this time it was Borneo, with the most appealing young Orang-Utangs at the Rescue Centre.
I'll write more when I get the rest of the pages finished
